He also said he has had conversations with others, from both professional and political backgrounds, who are “very interested in this party”.

Speaking alongside Mr Burrows and UUP deputy leader Diana Armstrong at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, Mr Robinson described the party’s leadership as a “breath of fresh air”.

“What I’ve seen in the last few months is serious leadership back at the top of unionism, whether it’s Jon or Diana, and that is a breath of fresh air,” he said.

“The UUP always historically was a big house, a big tent of unionism, and we’re nothing in Northern Ireland without prosperity and growth, and that’s how young people are going to stay here, are going to work and build and lead a life here.

“I’m just happy to be on board. I’ve been welcomed with open arms and I will play whatever part I can to support the party, support the leadership of Jon and Diana going forward.

“I’m excited to see what we can do for unionism and the entire community in Northern Ireland.”
