A public consultation will be held later this month

The Carlow and Laois County Councils are coming together to host a public consultation event on the matter.

Locals are being invited to share their views on the proposed Graiguecullen Cycle Scheme.

The Carlow and Laois County Councils are coming together to host a public consultation event on the matter.

Residents, businesses, commuters and all interested parties are being invited to attend.

“This is an opportunity to meet the project team, view the plans and discuss any queries or concerns you may have about the proposed development,” a post by Carlow County Council on Facebook said.

The proposed scheme will provide new and upgraded pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along Church Street.

It is roughly 750m in length, starting in Barrowvale Housing Estate in Laois.

The route will continue along Church Street, passing Oakley Park, St. Fiacc’s National School, and Governey Park.

It will then extend to Sleary Street and the entrance to Carlow Town Park.

It is said that it will improve access to local schools, housing estates, recreational amenities and businesses; however, it has received some online criticism.

Chairperson of Laois Sinn Féin, Aaron Kelly, expressed “serious concerns” regarding the proposed track.

He made a statement via Facebook, outlining the potential impact it could have on local businesses, traffic flow, and residents.

“What evidence is there of significant demand for this scheme? How many cycling accidents have occurred on the existing road network? What impact assessment has been carried out for local traders and residents? And Is this the best use of public money at a time when major infrastructure projects such as the Carlow Southern Relief Road remain outstanding? he questioned.

“I would encourage everyone to engage with the upcoming public consultation process and make their voices heard,” he added.

The consultation will take place on Friday 26 June 2026 from 3pm to 7pm in St. Fiacc's Hall, Graiguecullen.

Those who cannot attend in person can do so online via consult.carlow.ie.
