Two councillors from Co. Carlow have launched a new podcast centred around politics in the hopes of making the topic more accessible.

Brian O’Donoghue and Ben Ward from Tullow created ‘Through the Chair’ to reach a greater audience.

“We wanted to just be able to talk about politics, local government in a way that I think people can actually understand,” Ben said.

The podcast will run for ten episodes and will air on the same days as the Carlow County Council meetings, according to the Carlow Nationalist.

Episodes will focus on the two sharing their thoughts and opinions on topics that feature online or in the news.

The hope is that their personalities will be shown a bit more, too.

The podcast, being produced by Carlow-based studio Amplifi, is inspired by similar ones such as The Rest is Politics, Inside Politics by the Irish Times, Paths to Power and The Indo Daily.

“I think it’s fair to say most people probably find politics and current affairs relatively boring, and there is a bit of a bubble around it, and there’s a certain language,” Brian said.

The pair have a ‘jargon jar’ that penalises them for using overly technical language throughout the recording.

In episode three, Ben and Brian will answer questions submitted by listeners.

“It’s not going to be filtered,” Ben said.

The first podcast episode is available to listen on Spotify and YouTube.
