Almost €13million in funding has been announced to help fund projects that will rejuvenate Carlow Town

Over €12.5 million in funding has been announced for four Carlow projects under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

€7.5 million has been allocated to the Link Streets project, which will see the transformation of Dublin Street, Tullow Street, College Street, Charlotte Street, Brown Street and Castle Street.

€5.1m will go towards the Carlow Old Town Quarter.

The former Crotty’s site in the town centre will be purchased and redeveloped, as will the surrounding streets such as Brown Street, College Street, Charlotte Street and Tullow Street.

€150,000 has been set aside for both the Barrow Track Masterplan and the Town Hall Feasibility study.

The Town Hall project will “assess the viability and develop detailed plans” required to transform the hall into a visitor attraction.

The Barrow Track Masterplan project will establish a plan for roughly three hectares located on the northern edge of Carlow Town Centre, directly opposite Carlow Town Park and adjoining the River Barrow.

“Today’s announcement of almost €13 million for Carlow is a hugely exciting prospect for our town,” Carlow Minister, Jennifer Murnane O’Connor, wrote on Facebook.

“This funding promises to have a major and lasting impact on Carlow town centre and will build on the significant investment already secured through the URDF. I want to commend Carlow County Council for the ambition and drive demonstrated in its submission,” she continued.

The fund is used for delivering more compact and sustainable developments, as envisaged under Project Ireland 2040.
