RIP: 'Profound sadness' as Carlow Town hurling team legend passes away

A Carlow hurling legend passed away on Halloween, causing great sadness among the community
A Carlow Town hurling legend has passed away, causing “profound sadness” within the club and community,
Michael (Mick) McGree of Bungalow 5, Oak Park, Carlow and originally from Lisdowney in Co. Kilkenny, has been involved with the Carlow Town team since the days of The Pearse’s, as the club was then known.
He won a county senior hurling championship medal with the "Town" team in 1963, and shortly afterwards the club disbanded.
In 1968 the club was reformed as Carlow Town Hurling Club, and Michael was again to the fore, lining out with the first ever senior side.
“An ever-present around the club, Michael was always the first person to greet you on entry to our premises with a friendly face and a warm welcome,” the Carlow Town Hurling and Camogie Club said in a post on Facebook.
“Such was the esteem in which he was held within our club, on the occasion of his 80th birthday our main function room was named "The McGree Room" in recognition of his many years of outstanding service. The following year Michael was awarded the club's ultimate honour when receiving honorary life membership. Just a few short weeks ago a club contingent paid Michael a visit with the Co. Carlow Intermediate Hurling Championship trophy in tow, which brought him huge joy,” it continued.
Michael, who passed away at Hillview Nursing Home on Halloween, will be sadly missed by his daughter Michelle, son-in-law Kevin, grandson Teidí, and his wider family and friends.
He will be reposing at Carpenter Bros. Funeral Home, Shamrock Sq on Tuesday, November 3rd from 4pm, concluding with Prayers at 7pm that evening.
Removal from there on Wednesday at 10.30am to The Holy Family Church, Askea, arriving for Funeral Mass at 11am.
Burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow.
Family flowers only and donations, if desired, to Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
The Carlow Town Hurling and Camogie Club says it stands united and ready to support anyone affected in this time of grief.
“Michael, a chara, thank you for your unwavering support, dedication and countless years of service. To coin your own phrase - "you were a great, great guy",” the Club concluded.
