A proposal to establish a Norman study centre in Kilkenny has received a positive response from Higher Education Minister James Lawless, who says he will seek an update from SETU

Minister for Further and Higher Education James Lawless has said he is open to advancing proposals that would strengthen South East Technological University’s (SETU) presence in Kilkenny, including the possibility of a Norman study centre.

Deputy John McGuinness told the Dáil that, during negotiations to establish the South-East university, it was understood that “Kilkenny would have a significant role”.

He urged that “the commitment that was made to Kilkenny as part of that south-east university [be] honoured” and suggested that “SETU should be encouraged to discuss the possibility of a Norman study centre.”

Responding, Minister Lawless said he recognised “the merit in the Norman concept, particularly as we are coming to The Year of the Normans later in this term,” adding that “Kilkenny as a city with its great tradition would be a very suitable home for it.”

The minister also noted that SETU has “an action to enhance key strategic partnerships” and has established “a working group with Kilkenny County Council and Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce to explore opportunities for further development in Kilkenny.”

He concluded: “The next time I meet with SETU, I will inquire about the status of this proposal and what its intentions are regarding it.”
