Do you find the steps difficult to navigate at the Lacken Walk?

Cllr Eugene McGuinness has called for the development of an appropriate link between the Lacken Boardwalk and Maudlin Street to improve access and connectivity in the area.

The current access point causes some difficulty due to the steep flight of concrete steps which can prove problematic to the elderly and wheelchair users.

The first officially redeveloped Lacken Boardwalk opened in March 2012. However, by 2024, the cherished walkway required a makeover and following a major €800,000 renovation, the brand new modern boardwalk officially reopened in February of last year

“That is something that is absolutely required,” Cllr McGuinness told members at the June monthly meeting of the Kilkenny City Municipal District.

As councillors we’ve all had a go at this. That connectivity is absolutely required, particularly for elderly people and people with disabilities who come to a dead end there,” the Independent commented.

“It should be prioritised. We’ve done an absolutely fantastic job on the Lacken Walk, and I’m down on that walk every evening. It’s a fantastic walk, but for that small section, we should concentrate on finishing it because it would complete the entire ring.

“Is there a plan anywhere where this is going to be done? Does it form part of a plan?”

Fianna Fáil’s Cllr Andrew McGuinness concurred, stating, ‘we need to get on top of it’ and ‘get something organised as soon as possible’.
