A number of films, including the Halloween favourite, Hocus Pocus will be screened at the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny over the coming weeks.

Hocus Pocus will be shown on Monday, October 30 at 7.30pm.

Three hundred years after they were sentenced to die in Salem, a trio of witches return to gain their revenge. Terrorising the town’s trick-or-treaters on Halloween, riding on vacuum cleaners instead of broomsticks, the only thing that can stop them is a black cat – in fact a boy who was turned into feline form on the day of the witches’ original execution.

Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw.  Cert: PG

On November 11 at 7.3opm Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret!, based on the bestseller by Judy Blume will be shown.

The film tells the story of 11-year-old Margaret who returns from summer camp to the surprise news that her parents are moving the family from New York City to the suburbs. Upset about leaving her grandmother and friends behind in the city, Margaret also has to deal with the stress of a new school, finding new friends and the everyday pressures and confusion of early adolescence.

A long-overdue film adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved 1970 novel, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is a winning coming-of-age comedy-drama about one young girl’s experiences of becoming a teenager and her parents’ messy but always well-intentioned efforts to do the best for their family. Refreshingly honest and humorous, this is a delightful film that’ll appeal to teenagers and adults alike. Cast: Abby Ryder Fortson, Rachel McAdams, Benny Safdie, Kathy Bates

The final film is Stop Making Sense, which will be screened on Thursday, November 16 at 7.30pm.

Described as the greatest concert film of all time, Stop Making Sense brings to the screen Talking Heads at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983: David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison, alongside an ecstatic ensemble of supporting musicians. Renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) captures the band at their exhilarating best, in this new and complete restoration for the film’s 40th anniversary.
