A local action group has been formed in Clara in opposition to the erection of a 28-metre telecommunication mast in the grounds of Clara GAA Club.

The mast has received planning permission despite submissions of objections that were lodged during the planning process by residents.

Residents and members argue there has been a lack of consultation from the Executive Committee of the club with the residents prior to giving permission to seek planning.

Subsequently approval to erect the structure was granted, putting a small revenue generator for the club. The local community and a group of members of the club say they had joined forces to equal the amount and possible generate more through donations and fundraising every year to stop the proposed structure, but to no avail.

“Many of the residents were unaware that a mast was being erected until after the fact and are very upset and ready to fight to get the decision by Clara GAA Club overturned,” says Ray Scanlon of the local action group.

A formal meeting for the residents is being arranged to plan the next demonstration and plan of action.
