Editorial: Congratulations to the Kilkenny Leaving Cert Class of 2026!

Garda warning issue over scams following Leaving Cert place offers
The wait is finally over. Most of us can still remember the day we received ‘our results’ and how we felt they would almost absolutely determine our future lives.
They rarely did, for there are many paths to any profession and even for those who attain exceptional results that is only the beginning of a long and sometimes arduous academic road ahead.
College places were offered today (Wednesday) and while some students were delighted to receive their first choice there will be others that are disappointed.
They would be wise to remember that there are many ways and routes into any given career, profession or trade and these youngsters should be proud of themselves in having completed the Leaving Cert and look forward to carving out a bright future ahead full of potential and possibility.
Beware of rogue operators
Gardaí are warning the public to be extra vigilant as a number of scams are in operation to con people out of their hard-earned cash as parents and young people frantically search for student accommodation places over the coming days.
A new warning was issued regarding students being targeted and manipulated to act as ‘money mules’. As thousands of students celebrate Leaving Certificate results and await third-level CAO offers this week, An Garda Síochána has issued a nationwide warning regarding a sharp annual spike in accommodation fraud.Highlighting the need for vigilance during the high-pressure college search, Detective Inspector Alan Govern of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) strongly advised students and parents to stick strictly to verified channels:
"Students should only use recognised letting agencies or deal with people who are bona fide and trusted. If searching online, always check the URL to ensure it is a real website and take note of the privacy and refund policy sections."
