Fascinating item found in Kilkenny skip fetches huge sum at auction!

An amazing piece of antique equipment, a Marconi spark coil transmitter, sold for 10 times its auction reserve today on Day 2 of Sheppard's Auction House's Paradigms and The Unexpected auction in Durrow.
Found in a skip in Castlecomer in County Kilkenny twenty years ago, the transmitter (the same kind used to save so many lives on The Titanic) made €2,600.
“The owner inherited it from his father who found it in a skip about 20 years ago,” Philip Sheppard said.
“He thought it was an interesting looking object but he didn’t know what it was.”
The transmitter, which dates from around 1910, would have been used on ships to communicate with other vessels using Morse code.
The auction concludes tomorrow.
