The Cemetery Mass took place in Thornback Cemetery last week

On Friday, July 3, the local community gathered at the ancient site of Thornback Cemetery for the annual cemetery Mass, a poignant occasion dedicated to remembering and honoring those who have gone before us.

Fr Willie Purcell, Parish Priest of St. Canice’s Parish, was the chief celebrant at the Mass. He was assisted by Fr. Christopher, who joined the congregation in prayer and reflection.

The setting of the Mass provided a powerful backdrop for the celebration of Mass. During the Mass, the rich history of the Thornback site, which has served the local community for generations, was recalled.

The history served as a reminder of the continuity of faith and the enduring legacy of those interred within the grounds. The monastic site was established in the 6th century under the monastic leadership of St Brendan.

"It is a privilege to gather on this sacred ground," said Fr. Purcell.

"Returning to Thornback each year allows us not only to pray for our loved ones but to connect with the deep roots of our parish’s history. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and community solidarity."

The ceremony saw a strong turnout from families and residents, who took the opportunity to tend to graves and join in a collective moment of remembrance. The atmosphere was one of solemnity and peace, honoring the memories of those laid to rest in one of Kilkenny's most venerable burial grounds.

St Canice’s Parish extends its sincere thanks to all who assisted in the preparation of the cemetery and to the members of the community who attended the Mass.
