A disqualified driver has been successful in their application for its restoration, at Kilkenny District Court.

Former Ireland hockey star Catriona Carey represented herself in court.

Judge Geraldine Carthy noted the legal application was made in respect of two disqualification orders made by a previous court, on the same day. Under the Road Traffic Act 1961 the application was accepted on the basis Ms Carey had served more than half of the first two-year driving disqualification and the second disqualification was under two years.

The judge also noted that Ms Carey had paid a fine of €300 and handed in her driving licence post conviction.

Ms Carey handed documents in to court to show she had offers of motor insurance should her licence be restored.

Granting the restoration order, effective from July 16, when two-thirds of the driving ban was served, Judge Carey told Ms Carey she must now apply to the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) for the return of her licence. She must also have insurance in place before she can drive a vehicle.

Ms Carey thanked the judge before immediately leaving the courtroom.

*The address previously given in this report was the address Ms Carey resided at the time of the offence - she has moved away since and has no connection with that address*
