Today (Thursday) marks 80 years since D-Day

As people in Kilkenny commemorate 80 years since D-Day today (Thursday, June 6), here are some little known facts about the Butler Family and their connection.

Arthur Butler, sixth Marquess of Ormonde who received a Military Cross in 1918 for 'conspicuous gallantry during an attack', also served during WWII. Arthur re-enlisted in 1940 and was a Special Operations Executive personnel until 1946.

His daughter, Lady Jane, joined the Women's Royal Naval Service in 1943 at 18 years of age. She was then selected to go to Stanmore where she worked with the German code breaking group that operated the Enigma machines.
