Much-loved Kilkenny community man Benny McDonagh has passed away

Much-loved Kilkenny community man Benny McDonagh passed away on Sunday as he was 'listening to his favourite music and surrounded by his favourite people'.

In May 2024, Benny (who was preparing to contest the local elections in the Piltown Municipal District for the Green Party) was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

His life and the lives of those in his family were turned upside down by the diagnosis, but Benny's community and wider circle of friends and loved ones ensured that they rallied around him in his most difficult times.

Green Party Ireland have expressed their sadness "to hear today of the passing of Benny McDonagh, who ran for the Party in the 2024 local elections."

"His warmth and decency will be remembered fondly by all in in the Carlow-Kilkenny Greens and wider party," they added.

Benny is loved and missed by his wife Kiri, children Dubhaltach and partner Charmaine, Amber-Pixie and Caleb, granddaughter Orcah, father Ben, sisters Martina, Fiona & Niamh, nieces, nephews, outlaws, inlaws and all who loved him.

He is predeceased by his mother Delia.

Benny will be arriving at St Mary’s Church, Kells, County Kilkenny (R95 V184) via his residence on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) for service at 11am. Followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Codladh Sámh Benny
