Revenue officers based in Kilkenny have helped seize more than 7.7 million smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of over €7.3 million during an intelligence-led operation in County Wexford.

The operation, carried out on Tuesday, July 15, involved Revenue officers from Kilkenny working alongside colleagues based at Rosslare Europort.

The cigarettes, branded 'L&B', were discovered during a search of an unaccompanied trailer.

Revenue said the seizure represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €5.7 million in unpaid duties and taxes.

Investigations into the smuggling operation are ongoing.

Revenue said the seizure forms part of its ongoing work targeting smuggling and activity linked to the shadow economy.
