REWIND: Kilkenny - prepared for attack? (1936)

From The Kilkenny People archive in 1936
As stated in the Kilkenny People, the Minister for Defence informed Ald. Pattison, T.D., that "information or instruction in connection with precautions to be observed in the event of gas attack by hostile military forces would be available to the civilian population."
The Kilkenny People has therefore much pleasure in illustrating the latest type of gas mask used by English ladies (picture above).
No doubt a Free State factory will soon be started so as to provide work for the unemployed in the manufacture of gas masks made from native material in order that Kilkenny women may be immunised against the attacks of Mussolini's aerial gas bombers.
Inquiries for masks should be addressed to local motor traders, who will supply all requirements and inflate the masks but not the prices.
