No reports of injuries following large blaze at old Jute Factory in Tycor

Members of the public are being asked to avoid the Tycor area of Waterford city following a major commercial fire.

Several units of Waterford fire service from Waterford city, Tramore, Dunmore East, Portlaw and Dungarvan attended the scene of the blaze at the old Jute Factory on Saturday evening.

There are no reports of injuries, however the building has been extensively damaged and fire personnel remain at the scene.

Shortly after the alarm was raised, significant flames and smoke could be seen from a distance - including by the thousands of GAA fans attending the Waterford versus Cork match at Walsh Park in the Munster Hurling Championship.

In a update, issued on Sunday morning, a spokesperson for Waterford City and County Council confirmed the fire is under control.

"No casualties have been reported, however the building has been extensively damaged and fire service operations continue at the site this morning," said the spokesperson.placeholder image
