A local councillor has called for the “massive” crane on the Quay in Waterford city to be lit up as a tourist attraction.

Independent councillor Donal Barry made the remarks at the June plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.

Cllr Barry said: “You have the picture behind you there of the crane on the Quay. I think that’s a unique structure in Waterford, especially on our quays.

“I have raised this several times and if it was any other city, the effort would be put into making it a massive feature and having it lit up as a tourist attraction.

“When people come down the quays, they would see that massive crane there lit up and I really think that should be looked at overall in this project.”

He received no response to this suggestion from the executive, as Senior Engineer Séan Dobbs ran out of time to answer councillors’ questions.

The elected members were told that they would be reverted back to privately in due course.
