Calls have been made for a riverwalk in Waterford city with “huge potential” to be made a “key priority”.
Fine Gael councillor Jim Darcy made the remarks at the June plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council.
Cllr Darcy was speaking following a presentation on the council’s Outdoor Recreation Plan for the coming year.
He began by welcoming the plan, which he said had been compiled with “huge energy” and “huge input”.
Cllr Darcy said that the plan is not only good for rural areas but also for Waterford city.
He went on to cite the potential of the riverwalk which runs along a stretch of the Dunmore Road.
Cllr Darcy said: “We have a unique opportunity in the city with the riverwalk out around Ballinakill.
“There’s a lot more we can do in terms of water sports as well and what goes on on the river.
“I think that has to be a key priority. The potential on that riverwalk is huge for the city.”
He called for the riverwalk to be extended to the city centre, which would allow for people to walk to the city “without meeting a car”.
Cllr Darcy argued that the extension of the riverwalk would also help to alleviate traffic on the Dunmore Road.
He concluded by reemphasising his support for the Outdoor Recreation Plan, adding that “it’s a good start in terms of looking for funding in the future”.
These sentiments were later echoed by independent councillor Declan Barry, who said there’s “great potential there” with the riverwalk.
