Concerns raised over ‘really dangerous’ chains lining quayside of Waterford town

Concerns have been raised over the “really dangerous” chains lining the quayside of a town in County Waterford.
Independent councillor Joe O’Riordan spoke on the subject at the June meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore Municipal District.
Cllr O’Riordan said: “This is one I got from one of the master mariners of our town, Johnny ‘Woods’ Organ.
“Apparently, the chains linking the bollards on the Quay [in Dungarvan] contain sharp pointed links on them.
“Now, there’ll be some fella [that will] come out of one of the pubs down there lads and he’s going to have his eye taken out of it.

“If you could go down and have a look at it, they’re really dangerous.”
In response, Seán Gormley, Executive Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, said that he wasn’t aware of any issues with the chains.
Mr Gormley said: “The chains on the Quay, that’s been in place since, we replaced that there in 2018 or 2019.
“[There have been] very minimal complaints on that. I don’t know where this is coming from.”
He continued by saying that such chains are used on lots of quays so that the quay remains open.
Mr Gormley concluded by saying he was unsure of what alternatives there are, but that the council would look into it.
