The fire in the Comeragh Mountains continued to burn late last night

Fire crews have returned to the scene of a fire in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford this morning.

The fire continued to burn late last night before crews stood down their operation for safety reasons.

However, they have returned to the mountains this morning to assess the situation.

At present, the status of the fire is unknown, but it is hoped that cooler overnight temperatures may have subdued the blaze.

Large clouds of smoke could be seen rising from the mountains throughout the day yesterday, after fires broke out in the Mahon Falls area.

A smell of smoke was reported in the east of the county, including in Waterford city.

It followed a fire which broke out in a field near the Metal Man in Tramore earlier that morning.
