Fresh plans revealed for major extension to graveyard in Waterford city

Planning permission is being sought for an extension to St Mary’s Cemetery in Ballygunner
Fresh plans have been revealed for a major extension to a graveyard in Waterford city.
Planning permission is being sought for an extension to St Mary’s Cemetery in Ballygunner.
Permission is being sought for a cemetery extension to the east of the existing graveyard at St Mary’s Church.
Proposed works would include new internal roads, paths, car parking and minor alterations to the existing laneway access from St Mary’s Place.
A number of associated site works would also be carried out.
The planning application was submitted by Fr Liam Power on behalf of the Parish of St. Joseph, St. Benildus and St. Mary’s on Thursday, October 29.
The application is currently at the pre-validation stage.
It comes over a year after the parish originally sought permission for an extension to the graveyard.
The church’s original plans, submitted in January 2025, were for the graveyard to be extended to the south.
However, Waterford City and County Council refused permission for the development due to concerns over ground conditions, traffic and land zoning.
If deemed valid, a decision on this latest application is expected to take a number of months.
