Waterford Airport developer William Bolster has provided an update on the talks

There has been “good enthusiasm” during discussions between Waterford Airport and prospective airlines, the airport’s developer has said.

William Bolster was speaking to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú in a video posted to her social media pages.

Speaking at the airport, MEP Ní Mhurchú asked when people can expect commercial flights to be running in and out of Waterford Airport.

In response, Mr Bolster said that whilst the aim is for the project to be completed in a year, that will depend on a number of other factors.

He stated: “Well that’s the $60 million question but I suppose look, we’re kind of setting ourselves a goal of a year.

“But that will depend on weather, depend on contractors, depend on a lot of different things.”

MEP Ní Mhurcú then asked about the discussions that are ongoing with airlines over the possibility of running commercial flights from the airport.

In response, Mr Bolster said that those discussions will continue while work is being carried out on the airport.

“That will happen in parallel, so the airline discussions have already started.

“We’re building up data as we speak and reports to be able to push it out to various different airlines and we’re getting quite good enthusiasm from that side.”

There has been a large build of machinery at Waterford Airport in recent weeks as work on the runway extension got underway.

A large amount of top soil has been removed, with the majority of works understood to be preparatory at this stage.

As part of the project, the airport’s runway will be lengthened to 2,287 metres and widened to 45 metres to accommodate larger commercial jet aircraft.
