Plans have been revealed for the construction of an energy centre building on the outskirts of Waterford city.

A planning application has been submitted for the development which is planned for Kingsmeadow.

The proposed development would see the construction and operation of an energy centre building in the area.

Work would be undertaken on landscaping and associated ancillary infrastructure in the townland of Kingsmeadow.

An associated heat pipeline network would extend from the proposed energy centre building along sections of Kilbarry Road, the Cork Road and Brown’s Road.

This network is set to run through the townlands of Kingsmeadow, Pastimeknock, Kilbarry and Ballynaneashagh.

The energy centre building would integrate multiple low carbon energy technologies including the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs), and gas boilers for peak load support and emergency back up.

The proposed energy centre building would have a building height of 6.2 metres, with solar PV panels mounted on the building rooftop.

The proposed development would also include a heat pipeline network consisting of two. pipes, with a diameter of 450mm each, spanning a distance of approximately 1,470m in an underground trench.

It is planned that this network would extend from the energy centre building onto Kilbarry Road, travelling the length of Cork Road before terminating outside the IDA Industrial Estate on Brown’s Road, linking the proposed energy centre to future heat customer buildings in the area.

Ancillary development would consist of security fencing, access and parking, drainage infrastructure, and landscaping works at the proposed energy centre building.

Site preparation would involve foundation works, and construction of essential access facilities to support overall functionality for the purpose of generating renewable heat energy and transmitting it to future heat customer buildings in the area.

A 10 year permission is sought for the construction of the proposed development.

The planning application was submitted by Martin Tolan on August 27.

A decision by Waterford City and County Council is expected by October 21.
