Two Waterford voluntary organisations joined forces for the clean-up

Trolleys and scooters were among the items found during a recent clean-up of John’s River in Waterford city.

Waterford Marine Search and Rescue (WMSR) and Friends of St. John's River (FOSJR) joined forces to conduct the clean-up on Saturday, August 22.

The clean-up focused on the stretch of the riverbed from Hardy’s Bridge to the Pill Bridge.

A spokesperson for Friends of St. John's River said: “I was amazed by just how much was removed, including supermarket trolleys, traffic cones, bicycles, scooters and an assortment of other unsightly items.

“The clean-up took place at very low tide, with the well-trained WMSR personnel working in the river, undoubtedly the most demanding part of the operation, while members of FOSJR worked along the riverbank.

“We would also like to thank the ever-supportive Waterford City and Council for agreeing to collect and dispose of everything that was removed.

“A fantastic job by everyone involved. Thank you all!”

The spokesperson concluded by saying that Friends of St. John’s River is currently drawing up proposals for a long-term plan for the river.

They added that the group hopes to present this plan to the local authority at a later date.
