Waterford FC will take on Derry City in the FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday

A number of landmark buildings in Waterford city have been lit up in blue ahead of the FAI Cup Final this weekend.

Buildings such as City Hall, Bishop’s Palace and the SETU Glassworks Building are projecting blue light ahead of the big game.

Waterford City and County Council announced the move in a post on social media on Wednesday.

A council spokesperson wrote: “At Waterford City and County Council, we’re showing our support for Waterford FC by lighting up landmark buildings across Waterford in blue, starting tonight.

“As the Blues prepare for Sunday’s FAI Cup Final, we want to wish the players, management, and everyone involved with the club the very best of luck.

“The whole city will be cheering you on! Come on the Blues!”

Meanwhile, pupils in a number of schools across the city and county are being asked to wear blue tomorrow in support of Graham Coughlan’s side.

Waterford FC acknowledged the widespread support of the local community in a post on social media early today.

A club spokesperson said: “Cup final fever has most definitely taken over Waterford.

“Schools, clubs, businesses and organisations right across the county have turned Blue this week ahead of Sunday's Club Orange Men's FAI Cup Final.”

Waterford face Derry City in Irish soccer’s showpiece event on Sunday, with kick-off at the Aviva Stadium at 3pm.

Over 10,000 tickets have already been sold for the Waterford end of the stadium, with the game also being shown live on RTÉ 2.
