A local councillor has called for a bandstand to be installed in a popular park in County Waterford.

Independent councillor Joe O’Riordan spoke on the subject of Walton Park in Abbeyside at the June meeting of the Dungarvan-Lismore Municipal District.

Cllr O’Riordan said: “The last thing I want to talk about is Walton Park and the bandstand for Walton Park. I think it would be a fantastic addition.

“Walton Park, as Cllr Geoghegan said earlier on, is a wonderful amenity and we had the car show there last weekend, it was fantastic.”

He went on to explain what he thinks the bandstand would add to the park.

“I just think a bandstand in Walton Park would add another dimension to it and would be fantastic.

“You could have local bands playing there, you could have an orchestra group or whatever you wanted there.

“Somebody with a guitar, you know that could entertain people on a lovely summer’s evening. I think it would be a wonderful addition to the park.”

In response to Cllr O’Riordan, Seán Gormley, Executive Engineer at Waterford City and County Council, explained that the council has other priorities.

Mr Gormley said: “Certainly, it’s something that we can have a look at but like there’s a lot of works beyond even looking at new stuff.

“We have work for Walton Park, the Linear Park, the footpaths need to be done in the Town Park as well.

“There’s a lot of minimal issues that we need to try and get at.”

He concluded by saying that the council might be able to apply for a grant for the addition of a bandstand at some point in the future.
