The Bantams trailed 3-0 before having Antoni Sarcevic dismissed in the second half.

Head coach Martin Drury felt Huddersfield showed a “ruthless mentality” as the Sky Bet League One leaders swept aside Bradford 3-0 in the West Yorkshire derby.

A tremendous overhead kick from Joe Low gave the visitors an early lead before two goals in six minutes at the start of the second half from Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Joe Taylor killed off the contest at Valley Parade.

Drury said: “Our first three shots were goals and that shows our ruthless mentality.

“The players were talking about scoring five goals today because they wanted to double up what Bradford have conceded this season.

“I felt the first half was quite a poor game of football. It was a typical derby with quite a lot of long balls, second balls, that type of stuff.

“I thought Bradford started a little bit better than us. I know we scored, but I thought they started better than us and looked a little bit more connected.

“Second half, I thought we were much better. I thought we had more control.

“We demonstrated more quality in key moments. I like the fact that we scored three different types of goals and that we attacked in different ways.

“I was pleased for our supporters, who I thought were outstanding for us from start to finish. At times, it felt like a home game with the noise they were making.”

Huddersfield went in front after four minutes when Low superbly hooked home after Bradford failed to clear Ilias Bronkhorst’s looping throw-in.

They put the game beyond the home side with two more soon after the restart.

Sanches Fernandes seized on a slip by Corey O’Keeffe on the counter-attack in the 48th minute. Taylor nodded home Sean Roughan’s cross three minutes later.

Bradford captain Antoni Sarcevic was then sent off for pulling back Bronkhorst and Bantams boss Michael Duff said: “It’s a bitter pill. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong in the second half.

“I thought we’d been the better team in the first half. We were on the front foot and most of it was spent in their half.

“They’ve scored from a centre-half putting an overhead kick in the top corner.

“We started the second half well for three minutes and then we take a short corner for some reason. It’s two individual errors in two minutes and the game’s almost dead at that point and then the red card…

“Their first three shots went in. One’s an overhead kick in the top corner, the other two have gone through Jon McCracken’s legs but there are errors before that.

“We shouldn’t have taken a short corner and then the third goal, we’ve given them the ball twice. One thing we do know is that they are devastating on the turnover.”
