David Ajiboye’s deflected goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win.

Carlisle boss Rob Elliot hailed his players after they stunned League Two leaders Salford City 1-0 to book a place in the second round of the FA Cup.

Stephen Wearne’s strike deflected off David Ajiboye late in the first half after Archie Mair kept out Ryan Graydon’s penalty as the non-league Cumbrians came out on top at Brunton Park.

“I’m really proud we’ve beaten a team of the calibre of Salford,” said Elliot.

“The squad deserves so much credit because they were superb to a man.

“From Archie with that fantastic penalty save to those subs who came on were fantastic.

“The reason we’ve had our success and we are on this run is because we’ve been consistent. We believe in this group and this set of players.

“We’re in a really good place and the challenge to the players is to maintain that.

“I’m really pleased and really proud. But I want us to keep evolving off the back of that. We need to kick on from that now.”

Salford had won eight straight league games to open up a healthy lead at the summit of the fourth tier.

But after a shock defeat to non-league opposition, manager Peter Cklamovski was disappointed with his side’s showing.

He said: “We expected a tough away game. A cup fixture. The crowd got into it.

“Credit to Carlisle. We weren’t sharp enough. We were disjointed in our performance.

“We just couldn’t crack the game open and that’s the story of the night.

“It was disappointing to walk off at half-time 1-0 down. It wasn’t a reflection of the half. We had the penalty just before that and should have been 1-0 up.

“But that’s cup football. Those moments are what happens.”
