Will Sutton’s extra-time strike earns Oldham victory against Sheffield Wednesday

It was Dave Challinor’s first game in charge of the Owls.
Will Sutton scored a dramatic extra-time winner for Oldham as Dave Challinor’s first game in charge of Sheffield Wednesday ended in an FA Cup upset.
The homegrown central defender was up for a free-kick which the Owls failed to clear, with Sutton left completely free to nod home from six yards and secure a 2-1 win.
After an uneventful first three quarters of the match, it suddenly exploded into life.
Calum Kavanagh put Oldham ahead in the 66th minute with a fierce drive after Mike Fondop headed on Noah Chilvers’ right-wing cross – his sixth goal of the season.
Wednesday equalised 10 minutes later through former Oldham forward Davis Keillor-Dunn.
The Wrexham loanee found the bottom corner with a shot from a cross by substitute Sean Fusire, his fifth of the campaign. His celebrations were muted in respect for his former club.
The match ignited further in the 84th minute following a touchline fracas involving a large number of players. Oldham manager Micky Mellon was sent off and Sheffield Wednesday player Callum Slattery booked.
After Sutton’s winning goal, Oldham defended resolutely to close out the game.
