Road fatalities in Limerick have only reduced by three compared to a decade ago

OVER the past 10 years, the number of road deaths annually in Limerick has remained steadily high with just three less deaths last year compared to a decade ago.

In 2016, 14 people lost their lives on the roads in Limerick and in 2025, that number was at 11.

Aontú Councillor Sarah Beasley said: “Obviously any reduction in deaths is to be welcomed, but it is deeply concerning that the figures for road fatalities in Limerick are still so high.

“In 2016, 14 people lost their lives and in 2025, that figure stood at 11.

“That is 11 human beings whose lives ended so shockingly and so prematurely.

“It is devastating for them, their wider families and the entire communities.”

She added that collisions wreak havoc in their wake.

“Even when people escape with their lives, many victims have catastrophic injuries which may impact them forever.”

Councillor Beasley pointed out that the number of garda units tasked with roads policing duties has dropped by 40% since 2009.

“We need more gardaí and we know that visibility does play its part in reducing both accidents, road deaths and reckless driving.

“Limerick remains stubbornly high for road fatalities and unless we take this issue by the scruff of the neck, more and more families will be heartbroken throughout the city and county.”
