The proposal was first brought forward by club member Stephen McDaid at the AGM of CLG Ghleann tSúilí last year, before being proposed to the county board, where it received full approval. Manus, who tragically passed away in 2019, had a special connection to the competition.
In 2016, he won the Senior C Championship as joint player-manager alongside Sean Bonner, a moment fondly remembered by all involved with the club.
The newly named trophy was officially presented to the Kelly family. Manus’ wife Bernie attended with their children Mandy, Conan, and Bella, while his parents Donal and Jacqueline were also present. The renaming of the trophy was described as a fitting way to honour Manus’ memory and to ensure his name remains part of the championship he once proudly won.
The Manus Kelly Memorial Cup will be officially handed over to CLG Dhún na nGall in advance of this year's Senior C Championship Final.
