WATCH: Club hurling heroes named Limerick Persons of the Month

THE MONALEEN team who brought home another All-Ireland trophy for Limerick have been named the Limerick Persons of the Month.

The team booked their place in Limerick GAA history in January by clinching the All-Ireland Intermediate club hurling title after a nail-biting 1-17 to 1-15 win over Mayo team Tooreen at Croke Park.

The club were the first Limerick side to win the All-Ireland Intermediate club title.

The club won the Limerick Premier Intermediate Championship last October and will return to senior level action later this year.

To recognise their incredible efforts, on and off the pitch, the team were named the Limerick Persons of the Month at a presentation at the Clayton Hotel.

Players Simon Griffin, Leo Morrison and Ed Doyle were joined at the presentation by selector Dermot Gleeson and club president, Pat Coleman.

Speaking at the presentation Dermot said it was “great” to be there to receive the award.

“It was a roller coaster of a year but it was a great month when we won. We had a great time and we are probably still recovering from it all!”.

Ed said despite the high of winning the title, they are focused on their next challenge.

“When the final whistle blew we were over the moon. We are back training hard now and trying to get our feet back on the ground and get ready for the coming year”.

Dermot said everyone involved in the team were grateful for the support they received following the big win.

“The homecoming was unbelievable, the crowds were on both sides of the road. It was really good for the community, times were kind of tough and it was something to cast away the January blues”.

The team are training hard ahead of a busy few months and getting ready for the first weekend of the championship in August.

Following their All-Ireland win, the players visited their local primary school to share the celebrations and pose for plenty of selfies.

As well as a rapturous reception from the future stars of the club, they also enjoyed a reception of a different kind thanks to Councillor Francis Foley, Mayor of Limerick City and County.

Mayor Foley hosted manager Eoin Brislane along with the team and backroom staff at a special reception at City Hall following their historic win in Dublin.

The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
