The local authority has signed a contract with a UK company to supply and install replacement doors on its automated public toilets

Galway City Council is set to spend €500,000 replacing doors on automated public toilets at five locations, including popular swimming spots at Blackrock and Ladies Beach in Salthill.

The local authority has signed a contract with a UK company to supply and install replacement doors and carry out ancillary works, according to a public procurement notice published this week.

The notice specifically refers to the seaside facilities in Salthill, but also covers other public convenience sites managed by the council in Eyre Square, Earl’s Island, and Millennium Park off University Road.

The four-year contract was awarded to Lancashire-based Danfo (UK) Limited, which is a subsidiary of the Swedish public toilet manufacturer.

Danfo was also recently awarded a contract by Galway City Council for the regular maintenance of automated public toilets, which was also valued at €500,000 over a four-year period.

The company held the previous maintenance contract for the city facilities, carrying out regular inspections and adjustments in each of the five units, ensuring that the toilets and their exteriors remain in “optimal condition”.

The systematic maintenance routine is intended to reduce life-cycle costs by mitigating the need for large-scale refurbishment projects, according to the firm’s website. It also seeks to detect and resolve minor issues before they require costly repairs.

As part of its regular maintenance programme, the company ensures that flush systems are working correctly, as well as checking lighting and ventilation, while maintaining cleanliness and aesthetics to ensure a “positive user experience”.
