Richard Fahey, the dad of two time Galway All-Ireland winners Gary and Richie Fahey and Republic of Ireland football and Galway ladies star Niamh Fahey has died suddenly.

His untimely death was confirmed by their club Killannin who paid tribute to the local legend who had played, managed and had even held the role of chairman at the club.

Sons Gary and Richie were on both the 1998 and 2001 winning All-Ireland football teams with the former captaining the Maroon and White in their win against Meath in the first year of the backdoor system in 2001.

Niamh also won an All-Ireland for Galway in 2004 before switching codes and playing 114 times for her country in a stellar career which saw her play for Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Killannin Gaa paid a glowing tribute to Richard saying he will be remembered within and outside sports circles.

The club said: “It is with great sadness we announce the sudden death of Richard Fahey, Gortnagrough, Rosscahill.

“Richard’s life of work, dedication and excellence was certainly passed on to his family and many friends. He was a true supporter whether local, nationally or internationally supporting his children and grandchildren in all codes.

“Richard loved representing his family, particularly when deputising for his son Gary in 2023 at the jubilee presentation of the 1998 Galway Football Team alongside his son Richie in Croke Park and in Portugal earlier that year on the occasion of his daughter Niamh's 100th International Senior Football Cap for the Republic of Ireland.

“Richard also participated on behalf of Killannin GAA having served as Chairman of the club and was manager of the victorious Killannin U21 team in 1996 winning the County U21A Football Final.”

The club added: “Outside of football we will always remember Richard for attending our many card fundraisers where he enjoyed the game with his brother Christy and many close friends.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard’s wife Marjorie, his daughters Avicen & Niamh, his sons Gary, Jimmy, Neil, Richie, Phillip & Paul, his grandchildren, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers, sister and the extended Fahey family, neighbours and friends. Rest in peace, Richard. Suaimhneas na síoraíochta ar a anam uasal.”
