“IT’S a very special one, even on a personal note, to be able to go up there and collect the cup on behalf of the girls,” stated Kate Gallagher as she lifted the Catherine Donnellan Cup for the first time as Sarsfields captain.

The girls in green have looked in determined mood this year to reclaim Galway honours after losing last year’s decider to Athenry.

“I think our first half performance against a strong breeze, probably a storm really, was very impressive,” acknowledged manager Michael McGrath.

“The big thing was to get ball into them (Shannon Corcoran and Siobhán McGrath). And when we did, they created a lot of trouble. They were making the runs at the right time. To be fair to the girls out the field, they were finding them.

“We felt there was goals in us if we clicked,” said Siobhán McGrath. “Something we probably didn’t do enough last year was being more clinical. Thankfully, we did that today.”

“It comes from the players,” responded her father Michael. “Probably there was a renewed hunger after last year.

“It’s been a massive decade. You see how hard it is to retain your crown in Galway. It does take a special team to keep coming back, year after year.”

“We’ll be excited to get back because the hunger is back in the group,” concluded Gallagher about the upcoming All-Ireland semi-final against the yet to be decided Munster title holders.

But for now, they’ll celebrate being champions again.
