Sexy Tadhg and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh among highlights of Galway's Tonnta Festival

More than 20 Irish-language and bilingual events will take place across 15 venues in the city from January 28-31 as Tonnta kicks off Galway's 2027 festival season.
Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Sexy Tadhg agus Imram an 424: An Bus go dtí an Ghealchathair (with music from Trá Pháidín), are among the highlights of this bilingual festival, which has something for everyone: fluent Irish speakers, learners, or people wanting to discover more about the language and culture.
‘Imram an 424: An Bus go dtí an Ghealchathair’ will be at Druid's Mick Lally Theatre on Friday, January 29, while Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, joined by Aniar, will perform at An Taibhdhearc on January 30 and Sexy Tadhg will bring the party to the Róisín Dubh.
Galway’s Breda Larkin, meanwhile, will host ‘Níl aon Seó! Mar Sheó Sheosaimh!’, a bilingual night of comedy at The Mick Lally on Saturday, January 30.
The Tonnta weekend will begin on Thursday, January 28, with a lively trad session at Plámás Café in the city’s Westend.
There will be plenty of free fun for younger festival-goers and families in this festival, created by Gaillimh le Gaeilge to celebrate the part played by the Irish language in Galway.
On Friday, January 29, Cúla4 will be at Galway City Library for an afternoon of creative after-school activities. The following day, the The Mick Lally Theatre will host a full programme of free bilingual events.
Lá na bPáistí will return to Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh, Knocknacarra, on Sunday, January 31.
Workshops, games, circus skills, creative play and a kids’ disco will be among the events at the school, in one of the city's two designated Gaeltacht areas.
The previous day, the free VolkidÁna Procession will take to the streets of Eyre Square in a colourful celebration of the Irish language.
Tonnta will also celebrate Galway City's unique connection with the Gaeltacht and Conamara, with Turas Folláine ar Chonamara on Sunday, January 31, which will take festival-goers outside the city.
