Appeal lodged against the development of 47 homes in north Mayo

The plans would see the development of 47 homes at Friars Court on the Killala Road.
A planning appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanála by the Friars Court Residents' Association against the proposed development of 47 homes in north Mayo.
Last month, Mayo County Council granted Thawside Ltd permission to construct 47 homes at Friars Court on the Killala Road. The development comprises 32 three-bedroom, six two-bedroom, and nine four-bedroom houses.
As previously reported by The Mayo News, the applicant and Mayo County Council agreed to provide temporary access to the site via adjacent council-owned land, avoiding the need for construction traffic to pass through the existing Friars Court estate. The Office of Public Works also agreed to facilitate temporary crossings of the Sruffaunbrogue stream, located south of the site boundary.
However, Mayo County Council stated that while it was prepared to facilitate temporary access for the duration of the construction works, a formal agreement would have to be put in place before work could begin.
In a submission to Mayo County Council in May 2025, the Friars Court Residents' Association raised concerns about the impact of additional residential and construction traffic associated with the development.
The residents’ association also stated that a number of homes within the estate are currently being demolished and rebuilt due to pyrite, arguing that increased traffic through the estate could have a detrimental impact on residents and ongoing works.
The submission also stated that the proposed development could give rise to "unacceptable health and safety risks" arising from increased traffic within the existing estate and urged the council to take these concerns into account when assessing the application.
Prior to the appeal, Mayo County Council granted planning permission for the development, subject to 28 conditions.
