PhoneWatch urges homeowners to review security measures as latest CSO figures show increase of 49 burglaries in the region

Recorded burglaries have increased by 36 percent in the Mayo, Roscommon and Longford Garda division, prompting warnings for homeowners to remain vigilant as darker evenings arrive.

The latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) Recorded Crime figures show that the division recorded 49 more burglaries in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period last year.

Nationally, burglaries increased by 5 percent, rising from 2,015 incidents in the second quarter of 2025 to 2,119 in the same period this year.

The figures show considerable regional differences, with some Garda divisions experiencing sharp increases while others recorded a reduction in burglary incidents.

Cork City recorded the largest increase, rising by 91 percent from 68 to 130 incidents. Clare/Tipperary saw an increase of 82 percent, from 72 to 131, while Cork County recorded a rise of 51%, from 35 to 53.

The largest decreases were recorded in Dublin East, down 44 percent from 122 to 68 incidents, followed by Dublin South Central, down 30 percent from 236 to 165. Kerry recorded a 26% decrease, while Donegal saw burglaries fall by 20 percent.

Tips ahead of darker evenings

PhoneWatch, which provides monitored home security services, is urging homeowners to review their security arrangements as the country moves towards November and the Christmas period.

The company said darker evenings can provide burglars with greater cover, while homes that appear unoccupied or poorly protected may be more vulnerable to opportunistic break-ins.

PhoneWatch has outlined five practical steps homeowners can take to help protect their properties over the coming months:

  • Lock all doors and windows: Ensure every entry point is secured, even when leaving the house for a short time.
  • Make your home look occupied: Use lighting to give the impression someone is at home. Smart plugs can automatically switch lights on and off.
  • Keep external areas well-lit: Motion-activated security lighting can help deter potential intruders.
  • Store valuables securely: Keep cash, jewellery and important documents out of sight and use a secure safe where possible.
  • Use a monitored alarm system: A professionally monitored alarm can provide an additional layer of protection. Homeowners with an alarm are advised to activate it both day and night, whether at home or away.

The company said the period leading up to Christmas was traditionally associated with increased burglary activity, with cash and jewellery among the items targeted by opportunistic thieves.
