Contractor of north Mayo housing estate asked to powerwash mud from homes

Cllr John O'Hara told meeting of Ballina Municipal District that people living near construction site have complained of the mud from the site
A BALLINA councillor has called on the contractors of a housing estate in north Mayo to powerwash the walls of neighbouring houses which have been covered in dirt during the construction phase.
The construction of a 80-unit residential development is currently underway on the Killala Road in Ballina but local councillor John O'Hara said he received a lot of complaints regarding dirt from the construction site lodging on neighbouring houses.
Speaking at the monthly meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, the Fine Gael councillor said that residents living close to the construction site are not happy and asked for the council to speak to the contractor.
“I got a number of phone calls from people saying their homes are all dirty and their walls are all dirty and they were wondering if there is any chance they can powerwash the houses. There are seven or eight houses near the road and the amount of clay that has been going down there for the last six months. It is continuous all day long and the road is even dirty.
“They are giving out and maybe the contractor can be approached to wash it down. It is very unfair. One woman is over 70 and she is out with the hose trying to wash it down. It would be good if something could be done,” he told the meeting.
The Bonniconlon-based councillor also asked council officials to look at a raised pedestrian crossing near Leigue Cemetery along the Killala Road which he said was damaging vehicles. He explained that a truck lost one of its axles going over the crossing and asked that rise be adjusted.
“Something needs to be done with it soon because I am getting a lot of queries about it,” he said.
In response, Theresa Durkin, Senior Executive Engineer with Mayo County Council said she will talk to the contractor of the housing estate regarding mud running from the construction site and the council will also look at improving the pedestrian crossing along the Killala Road.
