Growing demand for LEADER and community supports highlighted ahead of Budget 2027

South West Mayo Development Company (SWMDC) has called on the Government to increase investment in community and rural development programmes as part of Budget 2027.

The call comes following the presentation of the Local Development Companies Network (LDCN) Pre-Budget Submission to Government ministers and elected representatives in Dublin this week.

Representatives from SWMDC attended the event, which outlined proposals for increased funding for programmes including SICAP, LEADER, community employment supports and rural development initiatives.

SWMDC said the programmes play a crucial role across Mayo, supporting thousands of people and hundreds of community groups every year through schemes such as LEADER, the Rural Social Scheme, Tús and Rural Walks.

Chairperson Thomas Fitzpatrick said community-led initiatives continue to deliver significant benefits across south and west Mayo.

“Every day in South and West Mayo we see how community-led programmes make a real difference in people’s lives, whether it’s supporting people into employment, helping local enterprises grow, or strengthening community resilience,” he said.

“If we are successful in our asks, we will be able to meet the needs of our people and communities at local level and build on the high level of support already committed by Government to our sector.”

Mr Fitzpatrick noted that demand for LEADER funding in the region continues to rise. Since August 2025, the organisation has supported almost 30 LEADER grant beneficiaries, with funding commitments exceeding €2 million.

He warned that demand is expected to exceed available funding in the near future unless additional resources are secured.

The national submission calls for an additional €6.1 million for SICAP, €10.2 million for LEADER and €12 million for community employment supports, while also seeking permanent funding for integration services.

Nationally, Local Development Companies support more than 150,000 people and 6,000 community groups annually across Ireland.

SWMDC said continued investment will be essential if local organisations are to meet growing demand and help deliver key Government strategies for rural and social development.
