Westport GAA deeply saddened by death of one of their own

THERE is great sadness in the shadow of The Reek after the death of one of the regions best-known residents, Séamus Gill. Séamus was a central figure in Westport GAA and truly loved the blue and Navy. His beloved club issued a heartfelt message this afternoon marking the death of a man who made a hugely positive impression on so many.

All in Westport GAA are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Séamus Gill and extends our sincere sympathy to his family, relatives and friends at this sad time.

In particular we offer our condolences to his sons James & Stephen (former players with our club, James is a current coach with our club) and nephew Martin (u15 coach).

Séamus had a long and proud association with Westport GAA, both as a player and as a selector and made a significant contribution to the club over many years.

He was a member of the Westport team that won the 1975 County Senior League title against Garrymore and continued to represent the club for many years. In 1976, Séamus also had the honour of wearing the Mayo green and red at senior level.

His involvement with football continued over the years, winning county titles with Westport/Louisburgh Masters teams.

Séamus also gave generously of his experience to the next generation. He was a selector, alongside Pádraic Barrett and the late Tommy O'Malley, on the Westport Minor B team that won the County Championship in 1997, managed by Kevin Cusack.

His commitment, dedication and love of Westport GAA will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
