Mayo, Midwest and Sawdoctors to receive awards from Irish Diaspora Society
Mayo GAA star Rory Brickenden will be the special guest at the Mayo Irish Diaspora Society presentation ceremony in Castlebar
THE Mayo Irish Diaspora Society will host a presentation ceremony in The Ellison, Castlebar, on Saturday, October 24, to commemorate Mayo’s historic breakthrough when winning the All Ireland Final on July 26th, 2026. The ceremony gets underway at 1pm.
Kevin Bourke, organiser of the event, says the Society decided to mark the occasion because of the huge pride and joy that the team had brought to Mayo people and home and overseas. “The impact of this victory will resonate with Mayo people for years to come. It has given a huge lift to us all and our ceremony on Saturday is to recognise this achievement as well as others that have become associated with that special day.”
Mayo’s 1-20 to 1-17 win over the reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry in Croke Park in July sparked wild celebrations in Mayo and among the diaspora around the world as it ended a 75 year wait for Sam Maguire.
A number of the Mayo team travelled to the USA last week visiting Chicago and New York and were greeted by hundreds of Mayo people at functions in the two cities.
The Mayo team and Andy Moran and the team management will be the recipient of the main presentation and the special guest for the occasion is team member, Rory Brickenden from Westport.
The Midwest Sports Department will also receive a special accolade in recognition of the now legendary commentary featuring Stephen Grealis and Martin Carney and it is hoped that they will be present to accept the award.
Kevin has also chosen The Sawdoctors for a Special Merit award. “Their song, The Green and Red of Mayo, has been adopted by Mayo followers and it is already becoming part of the culture of the county. We will present them with a framed Mayo team photo in honour of their association with the team and the wonderful memories of this special year.”
