London-based group Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers are set to release a fresh new version of the much-loved Irish folk classic Spancil Hill, bringing their signature blend of jazzy alternative pop to one of Ireland’s most enduring songs.
The single, which will be available across all streaming platforms from today June 23, sees the band step away from their contemporary sound to embrace a more traditional musical direction while remaining true to their distinctive style.
Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most poignant folk ballads, ‘Spancil Hill’ explores themes of emigration, homesickness and longing. The song has been performed by generations of Irish artists and remains a staple of the country’s folk music tradition.
For Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers, the track offered an opportunity to take a more stripped-back approach to recording.
Featuring a full-band arrangement, the new rendition combines warm instrumentation with understated musicality, creating a version that honours the original while introducing it to new audience.
Seán Finn, who is is from Tourmakeady, Co Mayo and is lead singer and songwriter with the band, said the song held a special personal significance for him.
“As a group, we’re always learning new music, including Irish folk tunes, and Spancil Hill was one of our favourites,” he said. “My late grandfather, John Mulqueen, was born in Co. Clare, and it turns out this was one of his favourite songs too, so it just seemed like an obvious choice.”
The band has established a growing reputation on the London music scene for its rich blend of alternative pop, jazz influences and thoughtful songwriting. Their latest release represents a nod to their Irish roots while showcasing the versatility that has become a hallmark of their sound.
Over the years, Spancil Hill has been recorded by some of Ireland’s most celebrated performers, including Christy Moore and The Dubliners.
The Late Bloomers’ interpretation of ‘Spancil Hill’ adds a contemporary layer to the song’s long musical journey while preserving the emotional storytelling that has resonated with listeners for generations.
‘Spancil Hill’ by Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers is released on all major streaming platforms on June 23.
