New facility will provide families with an additional option for remembering and honouring loved ones

Mayo’s first columbarium will officially open at Crossmolina Graveyard on Wednesday, November 11, at 2pm.

The announcement was welcomed by Councillor Michael Loftus, who described the development as an important addition to the local community and paid tribute to those who worked to bring the project to completion.

A columbarium is a structure designed to hold cremation urns, providing a dedicated place for families to remember and honour loved ones.

Cllr Loftus said the facility would offer families a new option for commemorating those who have died and would serve the community for generations to come.

He praised the dedication and commitment of the Crossmolina Graveyard Committee, saying the project would not have been possible without its vision and hard work.

“From the very beginning, they believed in this project and worked tirelessly to bring it to fruition,” he said. “They deserve enormous credit for what they have achieved.”

Cllr Loftus also thanked the Environment Section of Mayo County Council for its support and cooperation throughout the process.

He said the council’s willingness to work closely with the committee had played an important role in making the project a reality.

Describing the columbarium as a wonderful addition to Crossmolina Graveyard, Cllr Loftus said he looked forward to joining members of the community at the official opening to mark the occasion and celebrate the achievement of everyone involved.
