Music, film, literature and creativity on offer at the Linenhall

Castlebar arts centre has a packed programme of events, from a musical journey into space to a hands-on exploration of Irish wool
The Linenhall arts centre is preparing for another busy week of music, film, literature and creative activities in Castlebar, with a varied programme offering something for audiences of all ages and interests.
Film fans can enjoy the Linenhall Film Club screening of On the Sea on Tuesday, November 3, at 7.30pm. Set in a remote fishing community in North Wales, the British drama follows a married mussel fisherman whose life is transformed by an unexpected attraction. The film explores themes of masculinity, identity and desire in a story described as moving, sensual and at times tragic.
On Thursday, November 5, at 7.30pm, audiences are invited to experience The Pale Blue Dot: The Voyager Golden Record Reimagined For Our Time. Inspired by the Golden Records sent into space aboard NASA’s Voyager spacecraft in 1977, the multimedia performance by Elevation Ensemble combines music from around the world with new compositions by Irish composers Linda Buckley and Jonathan Nangle.
Featuring striking visuals and insights into the Voyager mission, the performance offers an opportunity to explore humanity’s musical and cultural diversity through the story of a remarkable space exploration project.
Traditional craft takes centre stage on Saturday, November 7, with From Soil to Spindle, a free, hands-on workshop running from 11am to 4pm. Led by Anna Doyle and Annie Gambrill, the event will explore the connections between farming, sustainability and Irish wool.
Participants will discover how wool is transformed into yarn, make their own drop spindle and have an opportunity to try spinning. Lunch is included, but places are limited and advance booking is essential.
The Linenhall’s monthly Open Mic Night returns on Monday, November 9, at 6.30pm, with Westport-based writer, playwright and teacher Fin Keegan as featured reader.
The welcoming event is open to writers, poets and anyone who enjoys listening to stories and poetry. There is no fixed admission fee, attendees are invited to contribute what they can.
Also on Monday, November 9, artist John Brady will lead a tutored life-drawing session from 6pm to 9pm. The sessions are designed for adults of all abilities, offering an opportunity to develop drawing skills in a supportive setting.
Meanwhile, the Viewpoints exhibition continues in the Linenhall Gallery until November 28. The colourful exhibition showcases work by seven celebrated Irish children’s book illustrators.
With opportunities to experience live performance, discover new films, explore traditional crafts and celebrate the written and visual arts, the Linenhall’s programme offers a varied mix of cultural events for the local community.
