Fine Gael councillor Cyril Burke welcomed news that two bus shelters will be installed before the end of the year

A Mayo councillor has welcomed news that two new bus shelters will be installed between Castlebar and Breaffy before the end of the year.

Mayo County Council confirmed to Fine Gael councillor Cyril Burke that an order for two bus shelters has been placed for the vacant bus bays along the Breaffy to Castlebar active travel route and it is expected they will be installed by the end of the year.

The Ballyglass-based councillor said that was welcome news for the community in Breaffy.

“This is fantastic news as we have also seen the reinstatement by City Link of the drop off and pick up link at Breaffy for the Castlebar to Galway bus route.

These announcements will advance the options for people and encourage more use of our public transport network,” he said.

Cllr Burke also added that the Balla Active Travel route is also under being pushed along and he said he was advised by Minister Alan Dillon that progress and funding on this route is expected in 2027.

“It will allow for safer cycling and walking for the people of the Balla area and the surrounding areas as it will connect a number of other walking trails. It will also connect Balla town to the Heathlawn Active travel which extends to Brize and could potentially connect the Facefield area.

“We will be pushing hard to have the Balla Active Travel route brought to fruition as soon as possible and Minister Dillon has assured us that it is a key priority for him,” said Cllr Burke.
