Photos of past Cathaoirligh of Mayo town must be hung in offices

Castlebar Cathaoirleach Cllr Ger Deere says that photos of his predecessors must be hung on council office walls
The Cathoirleach of the Castlebar Municipal District has called for the photographs of former Cathaoirligh of the Mayo county town to be hung in the council offices.
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere who is the new Cathaoirleach of the Castlebar Municipal District said that it is very sad that there is no reminder of the 'forefathers who built this town' in the county council offices in Castlebar.
Cllr Deere told the monthly meeting of the municipal district that the old photos of past Cathaoirligh of the town were salvaged from a skip outside Marsh House, the former offices of Castlebar Town Council. He said that if it had not been for the diligent work of a council official these photos would be lost and said they should be hanging on the wall of the office where meetings of the municipal district take place.
“They should be up on the wall. They were people who represented the town from that generation and to think they were thrown in the skip down at Marsh house. It is very sad to think that is the way...They should be up here. The forefathers who built this town should be up here. There is enough room until we get our own place and I am calling for them to be put up,” he said.
Cllr Deere made his comments after expressing his condolences to the family of Castlebar based photographer, Tom Campbell who recently passed away aged 97. Cllr Deere said that Mr Campbell was closely associated with the old Castlebar Town Council and took photographs of the past Cathaoirligh and he has an array of historic photographs of Castlebar.
