Plans lodged for 20 new apartments in south Mayo redevelopment

Mayo TD Paul Lawless has welcomed the proposals, saying that making older properties viable for redevelopment is crucial, and commending the owners for their commitment to the project.
Plans for a major redevelopment project that would deliver 20 apartments in south Mayo have been lodged with Mayo County Council.
Kevin and James Keane have submitted proposals for 12 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom apartments at a site spanning James Street and Ballindine Road.
The development aims to retain and preserve the historical character of the existing buildings while bringing the site back into use.
The proposed works will include the demolition of three houses on James Street, along with a single-storey extension, garage and associated outbuildings on Ballindine Road.
Plans also provide for the alteration and redevelopment of an existing three-storey building to accommodate two two-bedroom apartments and one one-bedroom apartment.
A decision on the planning application is due by Thursday, January 7, while submissions and observations can be lodged with the council up to Tuesday, December 8.
Mayo TD Paul Lawless has welcomed the proposals, emphasising the importance of making older properties viable for redevelopment.
He said he had engaged with local residents, the property owners, council officials and representatives at national level regarding the site, and had also raised the project in the Dáil.
“My position has always been the same. We have to make these properties viable to develop. In a lot of cases, regulation and the planning process have actually made it unviable to bring old buildings like this back into use, and that has to change.
“I want to commend the owners for their commitment to this project,” he concluded.
